Marys Song Of Praise

Mary, the virgin. The mother of Christ, the wife of Joseph, modeled faith for the churchthe faith that realized the birth of Christ in her life and fostered her discipleship. Faith is belief in addition to trust that leads to total dependence on Christ and then bursts into activity, producing a life of service.

We declare Marys story with her immediate decision to visit her aged, barren relative Elisabeth, who, was pregnant and six month mention in (Luke 1:36). Her pregnancy was miraculous, but we must never confuse how vastly different it was from the miracle occurring within Mary. Barren Elisabeth was not a virgin and Zacharias was the natural father of her child. Nevertheless, what a surge of joy swept through Mary as she heard the shocking good news about the miracle in Elisabeths womb, for it bore parallel testimony to Gods, power. That is mans extremity is Gods opportunity to step in.

Luke matter-of -fact reports there was a strong human joy in meeting of this two expectant mothersone in the flower of youth, the others bloom long gone. These two were to become innocent co-conspirators, soul-sisters in the divine plot to save the lost. They would share their hearts as few humans ever have. Through their birthing pain, sweat, blood and mothering, the world would receive the greatest blessing.

God is the subject of her song, Marys Savior is worthy. She had just experienced a wonderful visit with her cousin Elisabeth. So great, in fact that upon Marys arrival, the baby leaped in Elisabeths womb. She then praised God for what he was doing in having Mary visit her.

In response to Elisabeths words, Mary recited a song that praised Gods favor on her and her people. God alone was the center of her praise. The song writer declares: When I think of the goodness of Jesus and all he has done for me my soul cry out hallelujah thanks to God for saving me Hannah in (1 Samuel 2:1-10). Both open in similar exultation of the Lord. Lukes Gospel is full of lowly people; from the shepherds that find themselves stable side for his birth to the inclusion of women and children. His account encourages us that God is concerned about the lowly. Mary says as much when she declares that God had regarded her lowly estate. And she closes her song with the soon-to-be consummated reality of God exalting the lowly and bringing low the strong and proud.

This points to the redemptive work of Christ and accurately reflects the paradoxical nature of the Kingdom of God. In order to lead, we must serve, in order to be elevated we must first brought low. The Kingdom of God values humility over pride. It values the poor in spirit over those rich in their religious practices. The last are first; the least are the greatest, and Mary is a wonderful reflection of this truth. Mary submitted herself completely to Gods will and trusted His message. She willingly accepted the honor and the reproach that being the mother of the Holy Child would bring. Young women in the Church should follow the example of Mary in purity, chastity, love for God, faith in His word, and willingness to obey Him.
